Winckley Square Times Spring 2025: Issue 34
In this edition you will find our spring/summer Guided Walks Programme; the first in a series of articles called ‘Lost Legacy of Winckley Square’ is the Winckley Club; and two further articles on issues close to our hearts - the state of historic buildings in Preston. The first from the Friends of Edith Rigby concentrates on the condition of 28 Winckley Square where Edith once lived and the second ‘Preserving Preston’s Heritage’ takes a broader view of identifying properties across the city which are being neglected or are otherwise at risk.
Twinkley Square Times: Issue 33 Christmas 2024
A bumper edition due to delays. There are updates on what's been going on in and around the Gardens. The first part of the story of the statue to Lord Derby in Miller Park appeared in Issue 32. In this issue, the claim, that a crowd amounting to half the total population of Preston, attended the unveiling is scrutinised and the different responses of the various religious denominations revealed.

The Summer programme of Guided Walks and Talks is on page 4. There is an excellent article by Michael Akers: A MONUMENTAL DECISION. This is the first of two parts about the 14th Earl of Derby, Edward Stanley 1799-1869 and his family. Wonderfully written and illustrated.

In this issue Michael Akers has written a super article on 'Art Matters', having visited the Atkinson Art Gallery in Southport where they have on loan several works of art from the Harris Art Gallery. His article looks at the beginnings of the Harris Museum & Art Gallery housed in the Literary and Philosophical Society on Winckley Square. Also in the Christmas edition of the newsletter is information about the Friends of Winckley Square Christmas events on page 4.
Winckley Square Times: Issue 29 Autumn 2023
In this issue Victoria McCann, Archivist at Lancashire Archives, explores the Dalton Papers including the diaries and pocket ledgers of John Dalton and one diary left by his wife Mary. John Dalton built the sixth house on Winckley Square. Also we report on the fantastic 'Gala in the Gardens' held in the summer.

Thinking of what to buy as a present? Why not a 'Friend of Winckley Square Gift Voucher' for lovers of local history. £5 and £10 vouchers are available that can be used on any of our guided walks or talks.
Going on a Date: City Centre Datestone Walk
The aim of this Walk is to have a lively, fun, interesting activity to do in Preston’s historic centre, for individuals and families spanning the generations.
The Walk contains a city centre map with streets highlighted along with images of the datestones to be found in that street. The fun is finding them as they are not all easy to spot. You can find the answer sheet on this website.

The Statue of Robert Peel
In summer 2020 a movement gained support to relocate or destroy monuments to people and events from the past which reflect actions, views and attitudes no longer deemed acceptable today. Among the monuments cited was the statue of Robert Peel. FoWS thought it would be helpful to share what we know about Robert Peel in order to contribute to the discussions.
Past Epidemics in Preston
As we have not produced a Newsletter for June and July Steve has researched and written this article on past epidemics in Preston. It is amazing how many similarities there are with today's situation. I hope you find this interesting. Best wishes
